If this has been posted, forgive me, I was skimming and saw your question earlier about the handcount and decided to offer what I'd heard today. Someone explained that a hand count was very tedious-- you have a commissioner of voting type person (don't remember the official title) and a Republican and a Democrat and they take EACH ballot, hold it up to the light, examine it and decide what the intent of the voter was. They are looking for punches that are slightly off kilter, or perhaps not punched all the way through-- things a machine could have missed.

The Dems probably have good reason to think they will pick up some votes, as might the Rep. but I would guess that since the areas for which they have asked recounts are heavily Dem, they hope to get more. Maybe the Repub. should ask for some of THEIR counties to be handcounted!

It was troubling this afternoon to hear the Haitian community describing strongarm tactics of Dems at the polling sites, telling them to vote for Gore. They seemed sincerely frightened when they talked about how it reminded them of Haiti.
I fear this is opening not just a can of worms, but a virtual snake pit.
