AMD's SOI process may not use oxygen implanters at all.
The Silicon layer seems to be only about 40 nm thick which
looks more like epitaxial grown Si.

Regards, Hans.

I hope you don't think AMD can simply buy these implanters, haul them in, and just start producing huge quantities of VLSI grade substrates. It is an extremely complicated process which goes way beyond simple implantation. In fact, given the doses involved, it is remarkable that the process works at all. Given the quantities of wafers required, they will (at least eventually) need a low dose thin box process which is far more difficult than more conventional thick box processes. I doubt very much if AMD will get into the business of implanting their own wafers. More likely, if they are determined to go SOI, they will go with bonded wafers bought from SOITEC (a French company who has been doing this kind of stuff for years)
