You got me wondering how much support either candidate would have garnered without their parties (read without the mega donations). Many people complain both parties are the same. Since most of their money comes from the same places, is this any wonder?

About Nixon and use of power: Over the weekend PBS had a documentary on the lives of Al and GW. One item was that though anti-war, to help his father get reelected, Gore volunteered for Vietnam. His father lost anyway and on Gore Sr's birthday before Christmas they sent Al to Vietnam. I am not shedding any tears for the Gores here. But it does say something about how hard ball politics is played.
