What did the directions tell them to do? If they didn't follow directions, their ballot must be tossed. And, who would believe that they put them in the machine, failed to punch the hole, took them out, and then CIRCLED THE CORRECT HOLE? What sense does that make?

And, even if the name was checked, circled, or whatever rather than punched, in violation of the rules, if the directions were not followed, who could prove that it was the voter and not someone else who later touched the ballot and marked it?

The voter was given the ballot to cast in conformity with law. If it was not cast in conformity with law, it was not cast, and no extraneous marking can substitute for it.
