As our economy matures, good wages for good work made our middle class kept up with the Jones. They own everything in sight. Stores have to have everything under one roof, and many items customers do not yet have. Store space is to be enlarged or densely packed to impress the customer. AMES has all that.

Straight discount has to die a natural death. The death is caused by lack of margin in time of slow sales. Most store demands 600% gross margin to keep going in time of slow sales. Nothing new here. Upstart straight deep discount stores gave away the extra margin to their customers. Many successful stores learned to use upscale and door busters to bring in the customers to turn over their inventory. AMES already has limited upscale strategy.

Joe has to go back to school to relearn the fundamentals, of using year round sales(new door busters each week), and reticket them back to better gross profit each and every week. To be lazy is to lose the business and don't know why.

Nothing is ever new here in retail, it is what you missed doing the business that puzzles you.
