Puck. Here is why AT&T, BLS and possibly Nextel in the USA are considering abandoning TDMA and CDMA for QCOM's 1X-MC w/HDR CDMA. They can also choose W-CDMA due to the fact that QCOM has just announced their successful W-CDMA chip.

maxgo. If the GSM world must compete with QCOM's 1X-MC and the just standardized 1X-MC w/HDRto
stay in the game, they need the best technology possible. EDGE really doesn't compete in many ways and
involves extra equipment purchases and time delays by operators as it must later be upgraded to W-CDMA
because only W-CDMA has any hope of competing w/ 1X-MC w/HDR. Therefore operators are incented to
bypass EDGE and go directly to W-CDMA or to a 1X-MC + HDR overlay of GSM. Now, with quality ASICS
for W-CDMA actually available they do have a W-CDMA path available if they really want to stay on the
GSM path. They will hace to pick W-CDMA to avoid extra cost and delays.

Now, AT&T's and BLS's very serious problem is that no one in the whole rest of the world will support
EDGE. Thus EDGE is isolated and can never obtain the equipment economies of scale and interoperability
with the rest of the world that AT&T has promised and relied on. Thus AT&T must abandon EDGE if they
hope to install equipment that competes with Sprint and Verizon.
