Jim, the Republicans went to Federal Courts as it is known that the Democrats were "forum shopping" in Florida for a sympathetic Democratic Judge...this is why the Gore campaign withdrew its own FEDERAL LAWSUIT on Thursday because dockets in Federal court are assigned judges by lottery. The Gore folks did not get the liberal judge they were hoping for in the lottery and thus withdrew the suit and have been doing the legwork for which state court will be most sympathetic as well as having groups affiliated with the Democrats file "independent" suits in state courts. It is sad the media has failed to mention this morning that the Gore Campaign had filed and then withdrew in Federal Court first when they did not win a judge they own in the docket lottery. The Supreme Court of the US would get all this eventually anyway, so this just gets it there faster. (BTW I practiced law before the Federal Bench in my previous career.)
