Scumbria, The question completely threw Dukakis for a loop, and he actually did a very good job maintaining his composure. It was the opening question of the debate, and was rather shocking. There's an old saying that a Republican is a Democrat who's been mugged and a Democrat is a Republican with a pregnant daughter. In other words, lofty ideas and principals tend to flee when the situation actually impacts us directly. Dukakis was a very strong anti-death penalty proponent. The question was about how deeply his convictions really ran. And while that was only one factor in his loss, there were at least three others that I can think of. First was the convicted killer (Willy something, I think) who he had released and who had then killed again. Second was that dorky picture of him sitting in the tank looking like he wasn't sure if he had the helmet on frontwards or backwards. And third was the perception that he was a limp noodle, that there was no fire or passion driving himm (which was probably reinforced by his answer to Shaw's question). If he had stood up and said "who ever hurt Kitty would not be able to run far enough to escape me, nor would I ever stop looking for him, and I'd put him in a hole so deep that it'd take a week for the sunlight to get down to him" he could have shown that he had both the strength of his anti-death penalty convictions as well as some emotion inside. Contemplating the possible rape and murder of your wife is not be an "intellectual" exercise, and you shouldn't be able to maintain your "composure". Dave
