Zeev, I have very mixed emotions about manual recounts. Manual counts have been eliminated in most if not all states because they facilitate fraud. We as a country have determined that computerized counts come closer to the "truth" than manual counts by increasing accuracy and helping to eliminate fraud. I would hate to think that anyone doing a manual count would tamper with a ballot to make it less defective, but I believe that some will try. Because of my ambivalence, I don't know whether to be outraged at Bush for fighting a manual recount or at Gore for demanding it. The one thing I do know is that you can't just do a few counties, especially only the democratic ones.

In answer to a question from last night, an article in the local paper confirmed my prior understanding of the electoral college. It will meet with or without the Florida delegation on December 18th, but 270 votes will still be required to elect a President, not a majority of those present. In the absence of 270 votes the election will move to the House for the President and the Senate for the VP. This will be the current House and Senate by the way, not the newly elected one.
