Jill... " I think we should pour some funds into updating the system."

No question about it. If the feds can pay $600 for a toilet seat, they can pay for some new voting equipment. In this day and age there is no reason that a computerized standard can't be used. Such equipment could be activated by coding on your drivers license or state issued identification card that would work like a credit card... slide, make your selection and enter. Done!

The manual hand count that they are now talking about is a joke. Suppose you are a Democrat and you count 5,000 ballots. Let's say 2,500 were for Gore and 2,500 for Bush. What is to stop you from reporting 2,700 for Gore and 2,300 for Bush? We would now need two watchdogs, one Republican and one Democrat looking over your shoulder and counting along with you. Even then the two democrats can report fraudulent numbers saying the Republican watchdog was wrong in her/his count. This now sets it up for 4th manual count. It becomes a vicious circle.
