OT (Election): Mr. Bush has, IMO, just made a disastrous blunder. He now seeks to legally block the manual recounts in key Democrat precincts. Mr. Gore appears to have maneuvered Bush into a corner with his blizzard of legal attacks. Florida law allows election officials or candidates to call for a manual recount, so Bush does not appear to have a legal leg to stand on. Not only will he lose, he's certain to lose credibility because this action undermines his expressed confidence in the officials and process underway in Florida. He had, IMO, a strong position in insisting that the election should be over once the count of all legitimate ballots is completed next week, while Mr. Gore was throwing a tantrum about confusing ballots and talking of revotes. It's true that a manual count is likely to favour the winning candidate in the precincts in question. Well, so be it. Since performing such recounts only in precincts carried by Gore would be unfair, Mr. Bush should have responded by called for his own manual counts in the precincts he won, or if necessary the entire state. I'm expecting another sell-off Monday. The uncertainty just gets worse with each passing day.
