I live in the South, too, and the type of people that burn crosses are not liberals, but they do tend to vote Democrat, although I'd call them Dixiecrats. There's probably some in the Republican party, too, came in with the Religious Right. If the Democrats decided to be pro-life, these birds would go back to the Democrats.

Despite what Gore tells people, the Republicans mostly voted for the Civil Rights Act, it was the Dixiecrats who voted against it, the George Wallace types. Of which Florida still has more than a few.
