Hand counts are legal and the most binding form of polling.
The Democrats are smart in that they know they have until Friday for the absentee ballots to all be counted. And they only need 300+ to move into the lead. The Republicans suddenly realized what could happen and are now trying to stop the hand counting but it may be too late and not work. Afterall hand counting is the most exact method so long as the counters are closely monitored and don't cheat or make mistakes. And Bush is on record as prefering hand counts to machine counts.

Baker's reasoning as to why automated counting is more accurate than hand-counting is BS as we've just seen the re-count prove a 1,500 vote difference. Therefore I would be surprised if the GOP can stop the hand-count. This hand-count should benefit Gore but how much is anyone's guessh. The absentee ballots will decide it probably. The GOP claims Gore should concede now (no way he will) saying that the absentee votes always favor the GOP. Well maybe not this time as thousands of Jews living in Israel and other countries have sent in ballots for Leiberman/Gore.

I met two sailors from the Gulf carrier group and they were unaware of any of their friends voting from the ships. So perhaps the pro-Lieberman Jews could even out-number the military personnel. This will go down to the wire and may even be decided by less than 1,000 votes. The hand count should give Gore some extra votes. Then the GOP will scramble to have some hand-counting themselves. It will be madness until Friday when everything in Florida must be final.

And then if the GOP refuses to concede (count on that) we can worry about Iowa, New Mexico and maybe even Wisconsin, New Hampshire and Oregon. If Bush loses Florida by a nose-hair expect him to try and get Iowa, NM, Wisc and Oregon recounted. Then expect the Dems to recount New Hampshire. Bush would need to gain Wisconsin plus two smaller states to make up for losing Florida. It's madness but -

Finally, finally - there will be a victor.

I don't believe there will be any re-voting but if there were Gore would win because Nader voters would be gone.

I also don't believe this civil rights case will make any difference. But if the federal court grants a re-vote on that basis...forgetabboutit. Gore will take it.

The Bush people put out a confident facade and go through the motions of planning a cabinet. But truthfully they are terrified and paralyzed. They know that unless Baker can somehow put a stop to hand-counting that their 327 vote lead will probably disappear in a flash.

This is going to be very very suspenseful.
