The chief threat, the No. 1 threat of a Bush presidency, is that we're going to see a deluge of legislation pass the House by 4 votes and pass the Senate by 1 vote, and then Bush will sign such into law simply because he is a Republican.
It'll be open season on the existing delicate balance of law between labor-management, a woman's right to choose, pension plan protection, environmental protection laws, workplace safety laws, soft money from every segment of society save big business, a fair shake for minorities, a Supreme Court packed with personal choices of Falwell/Bob Jones, on and on. All this despite the fact that 200,000 more Americans voted for Gore than voted for Bush.
We ain't seen nothing yet. There will be outrage in this country, and, I fear, resulting violence. I pray not, but that would be my guess at this point. Bush would be ill-equipped to handle such. He is a weak man, and would enter the presidency emasculated by his loss in the popular vote.
The reason you fear, perhaps even hate, organized labor, the NEA, etc., is not that we donate $1 to political campaigns for every $15 donated by Big Business. You fear what labor can do to get out the vote, as was exemplified in Michigan and Pennsylvania. The Beck decision, by itself, would do little to curb union political spending. However, it would be an entry point for Republicans to "bust unions" big-time. |
