I don't think we can afford to conduct another election in this manner again .. Do you ???

I think there has been and will continue to be a gradual improvement in the way the Will of the People is expressed:
I think Democracy, with only white landowners voting, was an improvement over Monarchy; I think all white men voting was an improvement over only white landowners voting; I think all men, regardless of color (15th Amendment), voting was an improvement over only white men voting; I think all people, regardless of race or gender (19th Amendment), voting was an improvement over only men voting. I think the abolition of poll taxes and grandfather clauses (Voting Rights Act of 1965) to prevent many from voting was an improvement over "theoretical but not practical" equality of voting.

I think paper ballots were better than a count of raised hands; I think verifiable hand-tabulation is better than each person scribbling a name on a piece of paper; I think machine tabulation is an improvement over hand tabulation (apparently some disagree with this); and yes, I think a more automated and standardized method of voting would be an improvement over the current system.

But if there's another close election in 100 or so years, the method of voting, however "fool proof" (interesting choice of words, by the way), will not prevent a similar controversy.
