Off topic -- Election stuff ...

I'm not familiar with U.S. voting, but from the little I've been exposed to, I'm getting the impression that introducing the counting of votes mechanically was in no small measure motivated by the desire to reduce the errors commonly associated with manual counts. If this is true, what is being proposed is the outcome of a close election being determined after an accurate automated vote counting method has been discarded in favour of error prone humans performing a manual tally using methods proven unreliable. This, it is hoped, will more accurately assess the will of the majority of voters.

I'm beginning to think that G.W.B. may get some temporary 'brownie points' by coming forward and conceding the election to A.G. for the good of the nation, only to let the pendulum of prosperity swing against AG's presidency during the next four years. G.W.B. could run in 2004. Fortunately, I've not wasted too much effort following this train of thought, since the more I look at it the more ridiculous it seems: Politicians would crawl through iodine pools filled with broken glass in the pursuit of power, and to concede to an opponent when there's still the narrowest chance of victory would be denying the very nature of their existence.

Cheers, PW.
