The decision by Bush today to litigate this matter was disappointing to me. My take on the situation so far is that whoever wins runs a great risk of being a one-term President, and whoever conducts himself in the least partisan manner in these critical days when the election is undecided will come out in the long run looking much better.

I read the allegations of the Bush lawsuit, and while they make logical sense, Bush must be mindful of the facts that many Americans will not read the suit but rather will take their cues from those who are critical of the fact that there is a dispute. Bush is acting like he got 75 percent of the vote and is about to be cheated out of what is rightfully his. (Come to think of it, Gore is acting the same way).

The market will recover when this is over, but the democracy, and the respect it commands around the world, will suffer for some time.
