Generally, I discount any projections beyond 18 months. Unless a company is writing the standards and leading an industry. Even then much of any projection is based on wishful thinking. Recall that if you were to examine the First Call data historically, there is a very strong bias for analyst's projections to be lowered when we get closer to the period in question. It is a very strong bias, with coming in below distant projections by a margin of about 5:1.

I have read Smart Money in the past and my feeling is that it is a fine introduction to the investor who feels like dabbling in the market. A more thoroughgoing presentation is available from First Call. And independent research, as provided by organizations such as Sanford C. Bernstein and Piper, Jaffrey are valuable to the retail investor since they have less industry bias.

Other sources you might consider are Current Analysis and CIR (Communications Industry Researchers).

I will assure you that these and other independent research organizations have a view of the industry that is rather less sanguine than that generally provided to the public, by Smart Money, the wire houses and the research shops who's revenues depend on the industry. Even Current Analysis has been noted as not having clean hands. But I still feel they have a fair-minded approach to the industry.

Best, Ray
