Carolyn--I was only 13 years old when the Civil Rights Act was passed, but I watched the vote and I watched the signing and I'll be GDed if you expect me to believe that:

Jesse Helms is like Everett Dirksen
Trent Lott is like Hugh Scott
Phil Gramm is like Margaret Chase Smith

No friggin way.

The Southern Democrats of then are like the Southern Republicans of today.

The Northern Democrats then and Northern Republicans then and Northern Democrats of today, while having some differences, are similar in many respects.
