In the New York Times this week they had an article about the electoral college (actually two articles)

The first article was in the Thursday Paper (New York Times) and gave a brief history of the Electoral College. In short the Electoral College was an equalizer between slave and non slave states. The example they used was Virginia and Pennsylvania. The idea was to stop the non slave states (Northern) from having an election advantage over slave states (Southern).

The second article quoted some scholar as saying that if Florida did not certify a winner. Then the electoral College would just leave Florida's electoral votes out of the electoral process.
