Those that punched many holes perhaps were trying to insure that their vote would not be counted. And leaving it blank, Lord knows, might be re-interpreted as actually voting if a booger got stuck on the card.

As to what they look like? I bet they looked like mad voters. Mad that there weren't better candidates to choose from.
