I don't think you get the point yet. Of course Bush can call for all the recounts he wants to. That has never been an issue.

What has been an issue is the hypocrisy of Bush acting like he won the election before all votes were tallied, and his superior attitude in calling for Gore to concede so HE could get on with the job of being President. It was bad form. And he looks a hypocrite to me now with the recounting of his scorched earth strategies.

I should point out that he hasn't lost as yet. Those votes have not been counted and after all this may still not be determinative of the outcome. So before there is another unseemly rush to now say Gore has won and Bush is on the outs, I would counsel patience.

I will say that the Republic has fared pretty well tonight. And it is from that open exercise of local politics by the Palm Beach County Canvassing Board that I fully expect that whoever becomes President will do so with much greater authority and legitimacy than if this local hand recount was derailed by some autocratic shenanigans. If Gore does not garner enough votes now, I think his chances of further redress are going to be quite limited. And Bush will benefit from this added legitimacy. If it ultimately means that Gore wins, then at the very least it will have been done within the rules of the system and extraordinary court challenges to the balloting will have been unnecessary.
