Talk about a wait

The only thing harder than waiting weeks for presidential election results is waiting almost that long to log on to a news website. Sure, we didn't have much hope that the Drudge Report site would hold up against the crush of election-night traffic, but we were hoping for better results from the often-sluggish, always exasperating MSNBC.com. CNN.com came out ahead with its Akamai-powered (AKAM) network, which zipped along fairly nicely. And while Microsoft (MSFT) gets no points for MSNBC.com, its Internet Information Server held up decently against massive traffic to Florida's Elections Division.

Still, site scalability at this level is about more than Web server choice -- infrastructure counts. ABCNews.com and CBSNews.com learned that lesson the hard way. The Akamaized (is our point subtle enough here?) Washingtonpost.com was fine.
