"Today, we are hearing a different kind of bigotry from some members of America's elite. In June, the Majority Leaders of both Houses of Congress, Senate Majority Leader Trent Lott (R-MS) and House Majority Leader Dick Armey (R-TX), went on record saying that homosexuality is a "sin." In July, a group of conservative Christian organizations ran a $400,000 ad campaign promoting the idea that homosexuality is a "life-style choice" undeserving of civil rights protection, and urging gay people to "convert" to a straight life. In August, the Family Research Council orchestrated a press conference at which conservative religious and civic leaders railed against "the homosexual lobby," and warned that "normalization of homosexuality will destroy our civilization if left unchecked." And when the Senate reconvenes, anti-gay senators have promised to kill the candidacy of James C. Hormel as ambassador to Luxembourg on the grounds he will use his position to promote the "homosexual agenda."
