When u click on the links, click on "Claims" at the top of the screen. This is where Qualcomm is afforded its coverage. I perused the claims and somewhat disagree with this person's discription.
For example, EP666007 - Mobile Communications Device Registration Method.
Both the base station and the mobile have to use this patent. In 3G, this is very significant in that how and where the mobile registers determines what mode the base station will use to page the mobile and what technology it will use to establish a traffic channel, based on probability of where the mobile is, and where it is going. Please keep in mind that 3G systems will overlay, not replace, existing 1G/2G systems.
I completely disagree with this discription. No where in the claims does Qualcomm talk about "what mode the base station will use to page the mobile..."
It appears that the inventive step of this patent is that instead of the base station sending its identifier, it also sends a distance measurement. Furthermore, the purpose of this patent is to reduce registration when a mobile is moving back and forth between 2 cells. There are many patents simliar to this. Nokia has patents on a technique called Location Area Index (LAI) where a group of base stations comprise a LAI and when a mobile registers with one, it can "roam" (i use that term loosely) amongst the other base station without having to re-register, thus reducing registration traffic.....
To me, this appears to be a patent for Qualcomm where they are trying to determine a rough position for a mobile w/i the network....
