Hi Greg,
After 4 years of dumb luck and this year wiping out almost 2 years of gains I am looking at a new plan. Tomorrow morning I am thinking of selling everything except 3 holdings that I have had for 5+ years, CSCO, SUNW and GE. I don't know if this the right time to sell or not. I realize it is not the best time to sell, but am not sure that it is the worse time either.
What I am wondering about is "Selling short against the box" on these three stocks. I have never shorted before but this seems like a way to preserve capital without having a tax consequence. Aside from having to pay margin interest, I see no reason not to do this.
Would appreciate your opinion.
