Robert it is actually 20 years from the date of filing of the first patent (if other patents in a "suit" are "continuations") and 17 years from issuance, which ever is sooner. In special cases, particularly when the PTO has delayed granting the patent due to various reasons (excess examination, Dept of Defense "muzzling"), a petition can be filed to extend the life by five years, but to no more than 17 years from issue. At least that was my understanding when this was explained to me some three years ago.
