Ron Weissman, NeXT Computer's former vice president, joins Verity
marketing

SUNNYVALE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 27, 1997--Verity, Inc., (NASDAQ:VRTY), a leading provider of search and retrieval applications for the enterprise and the Internet, today announced that Ron Weissman has joined the company as vice president of corporate marketing.

With more than 20 years of experience in high-tech marketing and corporate information technology, Weissman will be responsible for managing all marketing and business development activity.

``Ron Weissman brings to Verity a unique blend of business, technology and marketing experience,'' said Philippe Courtot, chairman and CEO of Verity, Inc. ``In his years at NeXT and Filoli, Ron demonstrated his ability to think strategically and to forge key deals and partnerships--skills that will now help us build Verity into an even more important force in the marketplace.''

``I am excited about joining Verity,'' said Weissman. ``Thanks to the power of the Net, managing an organization's institutional memory is becoming the next business 'killer app.' Verity's SEARCH'97 solutions are well placed to play a significant role in this rapidly emerging market. I look forward to helping Verity take advantage of this opportunity through continued innovation, expanded industry partnerships and ubiquitous market presence.''

Prior to joining Verity, Weissman was vice president of sales and marketing for the Filoli Information Systems Company, a provider of software solutions for insurance and healthcare. Prior to Filoli, he spent more than five years at NeXT Computer, most recently as its director of corporate and European marketing, where he was responsible for increasing the sales pipeline, developing worldwide marketing strategy and serving as NeXT's principal corporate spokesperson.

Before his European assignment, Weissman managed NeXT's vertical markets including financial services, telecommunications and healthcare. He built NeXT's initial market as the company's first director of higher education. While at NeXT, Weissman managed NeXT's most challenging and successful marketing initiatives, including the company's transition from hardware to software, its strategic repositioning as a leader in object-oriented software, and its
Object/Enterprise business alliance with Hewlett-Packard.

A frequent high-tech conference speaker who has published extensively on information industry trends, Weissman has served on technical and marketing advisory panels for Apple, IBM, Microsoft, Digital and Sun and has been an advisor and consultant to many public and private organizations. Weissman has also recently served on national task forces determining the future of electronic recordkeeping in the Federal government and on the future direction of the Internet as a research aid. He serves as an Overseer of the University of Pennsylvania Library and on the Library's Technology Advisory Committee.

Weissman is a former member of the faculty at the University of Maryland, College Park, and at Brown University, where he
served as Assistant Vice President for Computing. A Fulbright Scholar holding his B.A., M.A. and Ph.D. from UC Berkeley, Weissman has published extensively on object-oriented computing and the role of emerging information architectures for libraries, archives and corporate information centers.
