Two sources for the unit volume growth - New fabs coming
on line shortly (other posters will provide details I'm
sure) and the switch to smaller geometries providing more
die per wafer. The wonderful thing about shrinking geometries
is that you get the volume effect of building a new plant
without the full cost burden of building a new plant. Dropping
from .25 to .18 will produce a spectacular rise in unit
volume from each plant equipped to handle .18 microns.

The unit volume has been pushed to the absolute max achievable
by the demand. Intel is essentially sold out for the next
quarter (and possibly beyond) and there are few things as
lovely to an investor as a semiconductor manufacturer
running at capacity. Also, I agree with a number of recent
posters who state that Intel should increase the average
sell price of their products as they move toward 300 MHz
and beyond and new architectures to boot. I suspect that the
low end will be left to the AMDs and Cyrix's.

The only cloud on the horizon is the DEC lawsuit which will
not go away and about which there has been startlingly little
information from Intel. That may be part of a deliberate
and carefully planned strategy by Intel. It may also be part
of an effort to be more careful about public pronouncements
from Intel in the future. In any case, I am told that good
lawyers can delay that case for a decade.

Good investing,
Burt
