Elmer, I think the cancellation of Mustang might be due to several factors:

1) Yield problems with large on-die caches, as you suggest. Though AMD could just brute-force their way through the yield troubles, point #2 would explain why that strategy would be impractical ...

2) AMD is having less success penetrating the business markets, so they want to focus their limited resources on their traditional strengths, which are retail markets and home users.

3a) Their server chipset and infrastructure development is way behind in schedule.

3b) Lack of third-party support. Hotrail cancelled their plans for an 8-way Athlon chipset, and VIA continues to make nothing more than a haphazard effort in 2-way SMP.

3c) Strong execution in server chipsets coming from Intel and ServerWorks.

I think you already mentioned #1 and #3a, but I also wanted to bring to light other factors which could spell doom in AMD's grand plans for servers and workstations.
