I think HotRail could have easily gotten their 8-way Athlon chipset working. But you can't get very far in servers with just a chipset design. You need motherboard support, infrastructure, OS support, OEM support, a reputation to build off of, etc. HotRail probably decided that neither they nor AMD had any of this. And perhaps HotRail didn't get the help they needed from AMD, which may have led to the demise of their 8-way Athlon chipset.

AMD is now pinning their hopes of 8-way SMP on Sledgehammer, which will integrate two processor cores, a north bridge, and possibly a large cache all on one 0.13u die. Two words to AMD: Good Luck.
