Maybe 1% of Republicans are of the type you talk about. They are NOT the core of the Republican party and not the median Republican. Look at the map. Even in those states where Gore won, it was not overwhelmingly for Gore. The same is true for Bush.

A typical vote for Bush II is a reaction to the perceived social changes occurring in our society, IMO and I suspect at least some are confused that Bush II is Bush I, and is therefore safer (better the devil you know...). It is also a vote against Clinton as a person.

The vote isn't about the economy. It's not about unemployment. It is about the fear put in people that we are becoming a weak, Godless nation that wants more government and partial-birth abortion on demand. The simple matter is that lower-density population regions are voting the most right they can, yet still be on the winning team.

A breakdown by region clearly shows there is a rural versus urban factor here. Maybe you want to distance yourself from the undereducated agrarian populace, but THAT is the core of the Republican party. I wouldn't argue that the Democratic core is anything other than union wage-earner households. I won't be claiming that I'm the core of the Democratic party.
