I don't accept your premise that one had something on the other, but for the sake of argument, let's assume they did.
Then I think a plausible answer to your question is LOYALTY. You have to remember Liddy's background; loyalty was in his blood. The same, I believe, could be said of Nixon.

Don't get me wrong. I did not defend Nixon's actions, and I argued for his removal at the time. I am just disagreeing with your recollection of the events and the giant inferences you are making concerning them
