re:"...do you suppose that those operators will look as reticent to advance their platforms as Alex from Cox in your message does his? "

I suppose it's entirely possible they are scared shitless already, if they are paying attention to what's going on around them, and what they say in these articles/interviews is just a PR self-confidence slant.

But then again...they're still busy installing BandAids. They're not even done with their "obsolete on deployment" buildouts yet, but they're too far into it to stop (plus it would make quite a number of people look bad--can't have that!).

By the time they *are* done--say another 12-18 months--there's no way they will be able to start anew. They have to recover their infrastructure build-out losses. They'll sit and watch the new infrastructure develop around them.

They'll see the breadth and depth and freedom of choice in the new service offerings, and realize they can't possibly compete and their only hope is to try and throw up regulatory hurdles and special interest groups on every street corner to prevent them from proliferating.

But by 2010, the utility companies and the cable companies will have swapped roles: the utilities will bring all your communications services via fiber, and the cable companies will provide power via their coax<gg>.

Oh those legacy catarachs! They can fix that these days with lasers, 'ya know.
