Geek on SAGEM WA 3050 & Information on GPRS/GSM in N.A.

(snipit)...As you can see from the picture(see link for pic), it's not nearly as small as Microsoft's "Stinger" phone. It also doesn't feature a slimmed down version of the Pocket PC operating system so you can bet it will be a little kludgy. My guess is it's going to be like Qualcomm's initial attempt at integrating the PalmOS with a mobile phone, the pdQ.

It's interesting that Microsoft is making its first-ever GSM/GPRS compatible phone available in other countries and not even planning to release it in the United States...

GPRS/GSM isn't far from being fully operational in North America and will affect the present/future wireless information devices:

-Voicestream runs over a GSM network and I believe that they are working on having an operable GPRS over their existing GSM by the first part of 2001.

-Back in July Deutsche Telekom, who utilizes the GSM network, announced their intention to take over VoiceStream, also GSM based, and this will allow DT to be the first worldwide GSM operator.

-On Nov 2, 2000 VoiceStream said that they were going to swap wireless spectrum with Cingular, a joint venture between SBC and BellSouth (the pure non-paging wireless 'data' is operated through their BellSouth Wireless Data division). bellsouthwd.com

-VoiceStream made an equity investment in Microcell, HQ in Canada, and their division 'Microcell Connexions' are presently testing RIM for data over their GSM/GPRS network in Ontario.

RIM with BT CellNet in Britain over GPRS, beta testing now:

Concert, a joint global communications venture between BT and AT&T, but I believe it was originally launched by British Telecom and MCI (1996).

"Logica has announced that its Roaming Interworking Gateway (RIG) has been selected by Concert, the AT&T/BT global communications venture, for its GSM Global Roaming Service. The Concert service provides global access via Concert's platform to 273 roaming networks in 118 countries, making it extremely easy for carriers and mobile operators to offer wireless roaming calling to their customers while instantly expanding market presence.

Could AT&T change from their TDMA/D-AMPS wireless service and the still-unproven EDGE high-speed data technology towards GSM/GPRS... now wouldn't that throw a few screws into the wireless equation for North America??

P.S. Thanks Bocor, at times I enjoy the journey (research) much more the destination (answers), but that destination often offers more questions that need to be answered.... Onward Ho!
