Pinhi,
Any competitor's success against NTAP will depend on their product's ability to compete against NTAP's product's. NTAP's proprietary software (OS and file system) sitting on a hardware platform assembled from commodity components is unique in the industry. NTAP controls the features/functions/performance of its OS (ONTAP) and its file system (WAFL) and is adding end-to-end content management software(through r&d and purchase) for enterprise and service provider customers.

NTAP's coming products using Direct Attached File System/Virtual Interface (DAFS/VI) technology will take their scalability and performance capabilities to new highs.

Dell and others may do well in the small scale market, but they are delivering products that are using the MSFT file system or the UNIX NFS and running on general purpose operating systems (Windows and Unix). Using that approach, it will be very difficult for them to deliver a product that competes against the measures of NTAP's "appliance" architecture.

NTAP has a very aggressive, motivated sales force that is well focused on its market objectives. I can't say that about Dell.
