Cosmo OT Election Fraud:
Something is rotten in the state of Florida, I think.
I am not normally given to conspiracy theories but there is something very odd, much odder than Pat Buchanan getting so many votes. This is a good case for Sherlock Holmes, or a real investigative reporter.
Think about Florida:
It went for George Sr in 1992 and for BOB DOLE!! in 1996, both of whom were much less popular than the opponent. Whatever you want to say about W, he is a much stronger candidate vs. Gore than either of the Republicans who preceded him. When was the last election Florida actually went for a Democrat? Jimmy Carter in 1976? I honestly don't know.
They say the voter makeup in Florida has changed rapidly, and that may be so, but it is still a Republican state with a Republican governor and legislature. Did Algore succeed in terrifying the older voters with Social Security Scare? Polls indicate otherwise. Did Lieberman energize the Jewish vote? Without a doubt. But still, considering everything, does this result make sense?
Election night and the exit polling service in Florida sends out bad numbers to all the networks before the voting is even finished in western Florida, let alone the western half of the United States, declaring the state for Al Gore. I was about to eat dinner at home when I heard the news and if I had been a night voter and a busy, rational person, I might have stayed home rather than vote for W among the crowds. The "error" (fraud) was "reversed" within an hour, I believe, but by then the damage, if any, was done. It was attributed to "human error," but what really happened? The networks seem totally uninterested in finding out. Obviously the truth, or continued discussion, could only make CNN and others, but especially CNN, look gullible, stupid or worse. This is one subject you won't see 60 Minutes tackle. Destroy Audi on bogus science? Hokay, but don't touch election fraud in Florida.
I read the "theory" of corrupt workers taking batches of ballots and surreptitiously using a stiff wire to plunge down through the "Gore" set of punches. This would 1) do nothing to a Gore vote and 2) double vote, and thereby invalidate, a vote for anyone else. I have read that a manual recount would, by its very nature, immediately destroy any remaining evidence of such a fraud. I don't know if any of this is true, but there is a shred of plausibility to it. Perhaps it's possible to analyze the first and second computer runs and determine whether or not there were statistically impossible sequences of "double vote runs," etc. Also, in Republican counties, was there any instance of large numbers of double run ballots (i.e., wire fraud)?
This is definitely a case for an honest investigator, and I'm afraid the truth won't be out for a few years. Perhaps the Great Florida Voter Fraud will join Kennedy's election theft of 1960 as one of the great historical stories.
It is time NOT to change the electoral college system, which works fine, but to institute computer based polling where you put in your voter card and go through a menu, adding candidates to your "shopping cart" as you go, confirming each selection just as we do GTC orders. With encrypted software and adequate watchdogs, while not 1000% foolproof and hackerproof, it would beat Florida (and Cook County) by a country mile.
I also watched the farce in West Palm Beach county, where the commissioners voted to hurry a recount. Carol Roberts, a Clinton confidant, and Theresa LaPenna, the one who "approved" the butterfly ballot and now is receiving death threats and has no political future, were the 2 commissioners who voted to obliterate the evidence. LaPenna (sp?) looked absolutely drugged and she was the marionette being prompted by the mysterious guy who gave her orders, live on world TV, to do this or that. "Pull my strings/And I'll dance for you/I'm your puppet." Remember that song?
