I really hope that you are right. But wouldn't a 2 GHz P4 in Q1 totally destroy AMD? I have to admit that I am shocked by the Register article.

And if Intel can easily go to 2 GHz on 0.18 nm, how far can it go on 0.13 nm? Maybe The Register was right when they wrote about the battle of a 1.5 GHz Athlon against a 3 GHz P4. I thought that it was a typo but maybe they knew what they were talking about...?

Another point that bothers me (supposed The Register is right): Intel seems to have a large number of optimized applications (and benchmarks, of course) at hand right in time for the P4 introduction. How many applications are well optimized for the Athlon? After 1.5 years... it's too sad.

And then, so far it seems that Microsoft has no interest in supporting AMD X86-64. But without the backing of Microsoft the Hammer will loose a lot of its attraction.

Any ideas?
