"Powell, Rice and Clarence Thomas do not speak for the average black man and woman."

I often get the feeling that they are somewhat vilified by the black community. Is it offensive that they have done well? Are they percieved to have "sold out" the black community? I would think they would be looked up to somewhat.

This is not to say that I agree with all of their positions, or that they are the ideal role models for everyone, but they do seem like good ones to me. Might be a misinterpretation on my part (maybe helped by liberal media) but I get the feeling that Jackson and Sharpton are revered and looked up to by the black community, while Thomas and Powell are not. Have to admit I don't know much of anything about Rice, accept that she is part of Bush's team and seems to carry herself well.

Also your point that 19 of 20 blacks going for Gore proves that democrats don't have "many" racists is not valid. It may prove that most blacks feel that way, but it does not make it true. These are the dangerous perceptions that people like Jackson and Sharpton promote.
