Wireless IM Graduates & COMDEX
Tomorrow at COMDEX there is a session that will discuss the present and future trends of two-way messaging and I thought I'd post some background information that covers wireless instant messaging for those who wish to stay informed. I've only posted snip-its from articles, but the full article is available by provided links. Sorry it's rather long, but just skim conten, if you want the basics, or follow links to get the full blown effect.

The first 'killer app' was said to be wireless e-mail, which RIM excelled at, now it's being said that wireless instant messaging (WIM) is the next step with the right applications.
Instant messaging goes to work Millions zip on-line notes to colleagues, business partners using free e-services from AOL, Yahoo and others, rather than fax, phone or e-mail, KEVIN MARRON writes
...Though he uses instant messaging a lot, Mr. Hanna says it is just one of many communication tools available, and is not a replacement for e-mail, phone calls or face-to-face meetings. It works well for quick exchanges of information when you don't need to explain things at length or have the kind of permanent record or reminder that e-mail can provide... RIM units are unique in using a packet-based network to offer a persistent wireless connection that automatically updates corporate e-mail accounts.

Killer App May Be Here in Wireless Instant Messaging
...Seybold distinguishes between short messaging services (SMS) and wireless instant messaging (WIM) with two criteria: "It must be available on multiple platforms, such as the desktop and a wireless device; service that is available only on a wireless device that does not provide messaging across platforms is not true wireless instant messaging. Second, it must include a `buddy list' on the mobile version as well as on the desktop version. Wireless instant messaging users must be provided with the same functionality that is available with desktop instant messaging..." news.excite.com

Next step in evolution of handhelds is communication Competition grows with consumer model of RIM BlackBerry on the horizon BY JON FORTT, Mercury News ...the BlackBerry's primary purpose is to be a messaging device, not an organizer. In that capacity it has its own wireless connection to the network, and is therefore less dependent on a PC than other handhelds....
....the Blackberry connects to a user's existing messaging accounts. Handheld makers and Internet service providers both have visions of consumers using always-connected wireless devices like RIMs to take pieces of the Internet experience with them, and thus feel more closely connected. And there's a chance the wireless devices will begin to do that. www0.mercurycenter.com
Getting the Message: U.S. Lags in Wireless Services Steve Fox, CNET (11/9/00) ...I'll go on the record right now and say that SMS will never be as popular in the U.S. as it is in Europe. (This is a classic example of a safe prediction: It will take at least three years before it can be verified, and by then, no one will remember it anyway. Unless I'm right, in which case I'll trot it out at social occasions, trade shows, and salary reviews.) The reason SMS won't conquer the U.S. is more cultural than technological. Because of the low cost of Net access and the high reliability of wired communications, Americans have grown accustomed to computers and computer-like devices connected to the Net. Net penetration is high; email is second nature. We expect to send and receive written communications via computer. This comfort level has spawned numerous wireless handheld devices to handle email, from the RIM Blackberry to the Palm and its many competitors. Instant messaging, too, via ICQ and AIM, is hugely popular. But it also is computer-based, not phone-based. cnet.com Note: Steve Fox (along with CNET executives & other staff memeber) has been using the BlackBerry950 since Nov'99) cnet.com
