OK, this one's really OT.

So far, everyone involved in the Florida controversy seems to be taking positions based solely on whether they think it will support their side. The Republicans are making whatever arguments they think will support Bush, and the Democrats are making whatever arguments they think will support Gore. But who is representing the interests of the people? Maybe the various judges who have been asked to intervene will end up fulfilling that role. We can only hope.

Regarding manual recounts, hand-counting turns up more votes because if the hole is not punched all the way through, it is possible for a human to see that the voter punched that hole, whereas the machine sometimes won't see it. Sounds pretty reasonable to me. But most of the hand-counting so far has been done in counties that lean Democratic, because the Democrats have only asked for it in the counties where they stand to benefit. Which begs the question, why haven't the Republicans requested hand-counting in counties which lean Republican? That's the part I can't figure out. I think they've shot themselves in the foot.

I'm all for getting as accurate a count as possible. But the same method of counting should be used state-wide. That would be the fair way to do it. How this could be brought about, given the tangle of litigation, rulings, deadlines etc. that we now see developing is truly a puzzle.
