"DoCoMo Seen Posting Record 1st-Half Profit on i-Mode"

Message 14801132
-------

"DoCoMo, which plans to deploy W-CDMA, a high-speed cellular phone technology, in Japan next year..."

Is 64kbs high speed?

"...says the success of i-mode will help it make alliances with foreign carriers without taking large stakes..."

Is NTT's purse getting light? Will I-Mode tempt Operators like cold, hard cash? Will Operators rush to share their value added profits with NTT? Why?

"...it's ahead of its rivals in introducing high-speed cellular phone service..."

Provided NTT actually rolls out wCDMA service next year, how is their projected maximum 64kbs speed ahead of KDDI's existing 64kbs service, much less next year's 1x? Does the fact that NTT plans on providing service to only a handful in 2001 effect comparisons?

"...The W-CDMA service, which allows users to send data at least 40 times faster than DoCoMo's current technology, will let users view moving pictures and download music..."

I infer that NTT's present service runs at .225kbs - I thought it was 9.6kbs?? Or the May service will provide 384kbs speeds. My - this is news!

Bob Emmerson's piece rings true: "Why, I asked, should we believe anything the industry tells us in future since they have not told the truth in the past?"

Will NTT roll out anything of substance in May? I bet not. At the last moment, in ceremonial fashion, I bet NTT falls on its sword.

All tapped out after spreading its bets - and married to a technology they can't make hunt. Sounds more than a little like AWE...

Then again, will SpinCo bail them out??
