<< national defense is unargueably a function of the Federal government. >>
Yes. But does that mean the government should dole out billions and billions, and incur a debt of far more billions and billions to pay to corporations involved in the defense industry just because it is within its constitutional purview to do so? Because it can, should it?
If President Clinton today decided to pursue similar "defense spending" to protect us all from something or other, how might that go over? The answer, I submit, has everything to do with public perception. He could easily do so, if and only if he first convinced the country that this was necessary. It does not have to be necessary, but Americans must believe it so. RR did just that. Clinton doubtless would if he could, and probably has in many other ways largely unbeknownst to us. But the magnitude of what RR's administration accomplished along this line puts RR in a league of his own, hands down. Clinton and every other president put together are bush league by comparison.
In other words, my friend, we spent trillions to successfully defend this country against the vicious, aggressive onslaught of.........you guessed it: windmills. And the genius of RR is that he convinced an entire country that this was necessary!
If I had one-tenth the.....uh......abilities of RR, I'd go to your store, pull you aside, have a little talk, and starting tomorrow you'd throw out your entire menu and start selling nothing but cole slaw and BBQ bean burritos. And, you'd thankfully pay me a ton of money for helping you see what a wise business decision this was!
Then, the next week, you'd fully leverage every last piece of property you and everybody in your family and everybody in your neighborhood owns to finance paying me another ton of money after I convinced you to re-instate your old menu! And you'd praise me for my wisdom, and thank me for the opportunity to pay all that money.
Ah, but I guess I'm not one-tenth the man RR was........ maybe that's something we can both be grateful for!
