Story Filed: Tuesday, November 14, 2000 3:48 AM EST

JAKARTA, Nov 14, 2000 (AsiaPulse via COMTEX) -- The number of cellular phone subscribers surged 75.62%
year-on-year to 3.198 million in the third quarter of this year, a report said Tuesday.

Operator PT Excelkomindo Pratama recorded the highest increase of 100.89% to 644,860, the report said.

The report said PT Telkomsel is still the largest operator of cellular phone in the country with subscribers totaling 1.449 million
or an increase of 81.25% from a year before.

Telkomsel has set a target to increase the number of its subscribers to 1.6 million this year and to 2.5 million by the end of
2001. For that purpose, the company will build more than 300 base transceiver stations.

The second largest is PT Satelindo with 954,123 subscribers , up 57.29% from the same period last year.

Among the regional operators PT Komselindo recorded the highest increase of 79.85% in the number of subscribers to
72,292 in the third quarter of this year. Other regional operators are PT Metrosel, PT Mobisel and PT Telesera.

The high increase came after the company began to use the Code Division Multiple Acess (CDMA) technology this year.

Komselindo plans to spend US$50 million for the migration from analog technology to CDMA.
