SAN DIEGO, Nov 14, 2000 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- QUALCOMM Incorporated (Nasdaq: QCOM), a leader in digital wireless communications and advanced electronic messaging solutions for the Internet, and HearMe, a proven leader in providing advanced, realtime voice communications technologies, today announced that HearMe's(TM) voice-over Internet protocol (VoIP) communications technology is now available free to Sponsored mode users of Eudora(R) 4.3 and 5.0 email software. QUALCOMM will serve a link into the Eudora toolbar for Sponsored mode users that will enable them to access VoIP with a single click in the Eudora software interface. Eudora 5.0 email management software is available as a free download at www.eudora.com.
"Through the integration of HearMe's VoIP application technology, QUALCOMM is able to rapidly deploy a voice-enabled communications environment for Eudora users," said David Ross, director of product management for QUALCOMM Eudora Products. "Adding VoIP technology to our Eudora email program enhances the way people communicate by bringing together the benefits of realtime voice conversations and the functionality of email."
Adding Next-Generation Communications to Email
For the first time, users of full-featured Eudora email in Sponsored mode have direct and free access to PC-to-PC live voice conversations through the use of a Eudora-branded version of HearMe's VoiceCONTACT(TM) eCalling application. VoiceCONTACT offers Eudora email users the ability to invite other people to an instant live voice conversation simply by sending an email. By clicking a VoiceCONTACT button located directly on the Eudora toolbar, users will be immediately connected to a co-branded Eudora VoiceCONTACT Web page, which provides users the ability to instantly contact family, friends and business associates for a realtime voice conversation.
VoiceCONTACT is enabled with HearMe's firewall-friendly eCalling technology, including One-Click Conferencing and presence-detecting "intelligent availability":
-- One-Click Conferencing enables Eudora email users to initiate live voice and text communications sessions simply by clicking on a contact's name or by clicking the Reply button embedded in a sender's email message. Users of VoiceCONTACT need only speakers and a microphone to participate in a live voice conversation. If a user is not equipped with speakers or a microphone, he or she can still participate via realtime text communication.
-- Intelligent availability gives Eudora email users the ability to know in advance if the party they wish to contact is available for a conversation. Before placing a call, VoiceCONTACT users can simply glance at an email to see whether the sender is available for a conversation. A click on the user's name, whether in a contact list or in an email signature, transforms a standard email into a realtime voice conversation. With intelligent availability, problem-solving that is better handled through synchronous voice conversation than through asynchronous email exchanges occur more easily, hard-to-reach people become more accessible and "drop-by" conversations are virtually effortless.
"In just over two months, we've completed deployment of VoiceCONTACT for QUALCOMM's Eudora email users," said Rob Csongor, CEO of HearMe. "The integration of HearMe's technology shows the speed at which highly scalable VoIP technology can transform an existing ubiquitous application -- email -- into an interactive voice-enabled application with the ability to fundamentally change personal communications at work and at home."
