Paul - Personal Directory being "dead" would depend on how you define "dead". I'm not be silly when I state that - just optimistic.

It's my understanding that there's no additional funding for next fiscal year for additional development on that project. Otherwise, the technology is available for ANY developer to download and "develop" upon. Novell offers no "ongoing support" (not sure what that exactly means).

I would assume (pardon my assumption here) that if someone were to take this technology and say develop a "product" which also created a "service" - Novell would support them in terms of development. Remember, Novell is a great company of engineers...the product side is well....not as strong :)

Perhaps the best thing Novell could do is "open up" this technology to developers and let them "run" with it.

Now as an investor I'd like to see how Novell would benefit from this....well - there are many ways. Giving one part of a solution away will create demand for other parts which Novell "sells" (the infrastructure stuff). Sort of like giving away Internet Explorer to drive sales of your internet-related products like web servers :)

Now, when I stop banging my head against the wall for never learning how to program I could think clearer...
