KDDI's drastically reduced rates
----------

Yep. Wireless data is getting cheap - at least in Japan... <g>

With KDDI's price point and technology(1x) they may well "deliver video and CD-quality sound to cellular handsets.." touted as "..key to DoCoMo's profit outlook."

And KDDI's proposed 1x EV upgrade in 2002 will still be more than a year ahead of NTT reaching its proposed 150K subscriber mark...

Though Verizon may lag, I'm hopeful that Sprint will follow KDDI's lead with aggressive 1x data pricing next year... Sprint will also benefit from an extra year's evolution in high speed applications.

In my view, NTT's parallels with T are evident and growing:

They're both bureaucratic, governmental and secretive - is it even possible to guess if their technology matches their rhetoric - with EDGE or wCDMA?

They spent (or are spending) huge sums on a technology bet (T - cable, NTT - global wCDMA ).

T, while trying to dominate cable - rendered much of its technology antiquated... NTT, while in a fevered attempt to globalize its Standard - has left its home flank vulnerable....

What will happen when I-Mode's stratospheric popularity inevitably moderates, or even wanes - along with the associated saccharine media coverage and influence NTT presently uses as currency?

Comparisons will only get harder - especially as KDDI tempts with data applications...

Over time, will NTT regret its investments in Operators whose commonality is tardiness to market with 3G services?
