Sorry, I must have missed your question.

While I still favor tax-exempt status for them since they are not officially "profit motivated", I would like to see something in the law that prevents churches from amassing excessive wealth..

Something similar to a REIT, where all revenues are passed on to the shareholders, in this case, the faithful and church sponsored missions and activities.

I know many LDS and Catholic folks might disagree with me on that, but it's just my personal opinion derived from my natural disdain for churches hiding their business interests behind the cross.
