Marconi's Cost-Effective, End-To-End DSL Solution ChosenBy MetTel for Business and Residential Market Expansion Marconi Solutions Include Help in Planning, Building and Operating Network PITTSBURGH, Nov. 13 /PRNewswire/ -- Marconi (Nasdaq: MONI; London), a global supplier of advanced communications solutions, and Metropolitan Telecommunications, Inc. (MetTel), a fast-growing northeastern U.S. integrated communications provider (ICP), announced today a relationship that will expand MetTel's customer and revenue base by developing complete network access services. Marconi's complete array of data, voice and access solutions include Digital Subscriber Line (DSL), DS1, ATM, ATM UNI and other dedicated bandwidth services to augment MetTel's demonstrated expertise in supplying voice data services. (Photo: newscom.com ) "We feel that Marconi has the ability to provide MetTel with best-of-breed equipment solutions and top-notch professional services for world-class customer services. These services will allow MetTel to operate efficiently, decreasing our time to market and reducing our operational expenses. Our intent is to take this partnership and form a template for new market development as MetTel increases its market penetration throughout the Northeast," said Ed Fox, MetTel vice president of network services. MetTel expects to begin offering the enhanced voice and data services in eight new states over the next four to six months and to continue expanding to another 12 states over the next two years. Key to this expansion is the strength of Marconi's network plan, build and operate services that bundle backbone and edge switches and DSL concentrators into a complete communications solution. "Marconi is pleased to announce this relationship with MetTel. Winning MetTel's business shows Marconi's ability to deliver the right communications solution at the right time to give our customers their best opportunity for success," said Bill Bridgwater, president of the Americas for Marconi Communications. The Business Challenge With the market for voice services maturing and increasing competition on all fronts, MetTel sought to secure and expand its residential and business customer bases. By effectively splitting the bandwidth on copper wires to accommodate both voice and data, MetTel can expand into higher-revenue data services while remaining extremely competitive. "As line sharing and line splitting become more prevalent in the marketplace, we see the highly efficient network we're building with Marconi as a great way to leverage our success by providing advanced data services to our voice market as well as by winning new business," said Fox. Solution Details For its value-added service offering, MetTel turned to Marconi's Services organization for the expertise to assemble network components into a complete, end-to-end communications solution ready to go to work generating new revenues. "We like the plan, build, operate concept. At this point in the infancy of our network buildout, we don't have the expertise or the manpower to take care of the entire buildout. Marconi Services allows us to take care of the things we need to worry about and let Marconi take care of the rest," said Fox. The solution includes an ATM backbone based on Marconi's TNX(TM)-1100, scalable from 2.5 Gbps to 10 Gbps, the TNX-210 for installation in co-location sites and the SSA(TM)-200 carrier-class DSL concentrator. The SSA-200 supports up to 192 ports of voice and data services, using any combination of ADSL, G.lite, IDSL, and SDSL concurrently from a single chassis. Element management software enables remote configuration, fault analysis and performance monitoring from a single, central location. Marconi's SSA-200 is a result of the recently announced relationship between Marconi and Copper Mountain Networks, the leading provider of business DSL solutions.
