Growth In Orders For Japanese Chipmaking Gear Slows Sharply
Tuesday, November 14, 2000
TOKYO (Nikkei)--Orders for Japanese-made chip-manufacturing equipment, including that for export, rose 28.8% year on year to 177.72 billion yen in September, but the rate of growth declined 89.4 percentage points from August, the Semiconductor Equipment Association of Japan reported Tuesday.

However, not until the figures for October and November are available will it become clear whether the chipmaking device market is headed for a slowdown, an association official said.

Orders for Japan-made wafer-processing machines rose 29.7%, while those for testing equipment climbed 18.5%.

Domestic orders for wafer-processing machines, including foreign-made equipment, soared 83.1% and those for testing equipment rose 19.3%. Orders for assembly devices edged up 2.8%. Total domestic sales in September rose to a record 207.93 billion yen.
